Lucky life and red shoes

Look at my new red shoes! I am so loving them!

Yes, they are awesome! And yes, I’m posting on my blog about my new shoes. It sort of sounds ridiculous, but for the past few years, specifically the past year, we have been living very frugally. We had a baby, I gave up working as an art director, we moved and pay higher rent to live in an amazing house (we love our house), so we have been close to broke (American close-to-broke – I realize there’s a big difference between American broke and rest-of-the-world broke) off and on. So, buying a nice pair of shoes… well, it’s sort of a big deal. But this post isn’t just about shoes. It’s about freedom and choices and luckiness.

Dave, Indira, Darwin, and I are on vacation right now. (Molly is staying at a “spa” in Nutley, NJ with her extended family!). We left a day early. Because we felt like it. We’ll be back around the 16th. ONLY because Dave is running a Mud Run in Philly on the 17th. It’s summer and we have FREEDOM! We don’t have to squeeze things that we want to do into a three week or four week (or, gasp, two week) time period. You see, Dave is a professor. And I build websites and design things from the comfort of our home. This means that I get to stay home with our daughter, which is, at times, incredibly difficult and exhausting, but pretty much one of the most rewarding things I could ever imagine. AND I get to work from home. Yes, it’s difficult squeezing it in but I’m not dealing with anything resembling a 9-5 schedule. I work during naps (when they happen; Indira has never been a great sleeper) and at night and on weekends. And in the summer, Dave gets to work on his art and I get to work on whatever it is I’m working on every day. During the week we tend to swap hour by hour during the day and have evenings and weekends for us and for fun. It’s great. We’re lucky. We chose it and I’m thrilled with our choice.

Now, if only we could get our asses out of Pennsyltucky… but that’s for another post and you’re probably tired of hearing about that anyway.

Okay, back to vacation! And my new red shoes.

Mountains, mountains, freedom and mountains

Something that makes me smile is memories of the road trip that D and I took out west a few years ago. Hmmm, probably more like 5 years ago. Not really a “few”. We flew out to Salt Lake City, Utah and rented a car and cruised from there. We explored Utah a bit (not as much as we would have liked but we’re saving it for another trip), and headed to Yellowstone and then on up to Montana to visit family and to thoroughly and completely and passionately enjoy Glacier National Park. We didn’t have enough time there. Didn’t explore enough, but what we did explore I can confidently say we both fell in love with. I’ve been longing to go back. The mountains there are so majestic and there’s a more primitive feel there than there is in, for instance, Yellowstone (which we also did love!). This photo is actually not from Glacier or Yellowstone but it is from that trip. From the Tetons, which we didn’t get to explore nearly enough. It was more of a quick drive-by; an afterthought. But thoughts of that trip and this photo make me smile.

Sidenote:  We need to go back because I borrowed my mom’s camera on this trip and took some amazing photos. NOT in high resolution! Ahhhhhh. Sadness.

Weekend tripping

This is a delayed post, but last weekend we took our first (mini) road trip with Indie. Marly joined us too and we cruised up to check out Dave’s show in Virginia. Unfortunately, I missed the opening reception because it was only a week after Indira was born but I’m so glad I finally got to see the show in person. Wow. It was amazing! I was really blown away. Dave’s art has evolved so much and this show was just so impressive and cohesive and beautiful and captivating. I was so proud when he sent me a photo as he was working on it and seeing it in person really did blow me away. I wish I had more time to just sit and enjoy it but lately there’s no extra “sitting and enjoying” time. There will be again one day though.
